Set beneath the historic fortifications of Birgu, overlooking Valletta, the marina combines a temperate winter climate, year-round facilities and a dedicated programme for crew, making it one of the Mediterranean’s most practical and rewarding places to spend the off-season.

A milder winter for crew and vessel

While much of Europe faces harsh winter conditions, Malta enjoys average temperatures of between 12°C and 18°C through the winter months. For crew, that means more time outdoors and comfortable working conditions on deck. For Captains, it means pleasant sailing conditions and calmer seas for off-season cruising to Gozo, Sicily and further afield in Southern Europe.

A dedicated programme for crew

The quieter pace of winter allows the Grand Harbour Marina team to give every yacht its full attention. Alongside personal, attentive service, the marina runs a bespoke agenda of events and activities for crew throughout the winter, encouraging crew to make the most of their free time, explore the island and build friendships across the visiting fleet.

History

Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage city, is a short distance from the marina, with its museums, galleries, festivals and local events all easier to enjoy without the summer crowds. On the water, crew can continue to enjoy diving, water sports and sailing in clear, temperate seas.

The ideal window for maintenance and refit

For Captains planning maintenance, repairs or upgrades before the coming season, winter in Malta offers access to established shipyards and skilled technicians without the pressure of peak-season demand. From mechanical and electrical work to larger refit projects, the off-season is the best time to have a yacht fully prepared for the summer ahead.

Facilities open all year round

Grand Harbour Marina’s facilities remain fully operational throughout the winter. Restaurants and bars, a gym and wellness offerings are all on hand, set against one of the most striking harbour views in the Mediterranean.

Easy crew changes and guest travel

Malta International Airport serves more than 100 destinations with direct flights, including frequent connections to London, Rome, Paris and Frankfurt. This makes crew rotations, owner visits and contractor travel straightforward throughout the winter.

Preferential winter rates

Winter berthing rates are typically lower than in peak season, offering owners and managers cost-effective rates alongside the financial and operational flexibility of securing a longer-term berth ahead of the busy summer months.
