Virtually uninhabited and with no urban areas or car access, it is the ideal Mediterranean island getaway to detach from the rest of the world and take in the picturesque surroundings.

Famous for its Blue Lagoon, but with so much more to offer, this tiny island boasts stunning panoramic views of both sunrise & sunset – a perfect setting for any occasion.

If you are planning a trip to Comino this Summer here’s what you need to know:

Top 3 Bays:
  1. Blue Lagoon – The most popular of the 3 bays, it’s soft azure waters are astonishingly clear creating a vast natural swimming pool for bathers to enjoy without the disturbance of boaters.
  2. Crystal Lagoon – A hidden gem only accessible by boat. The waters are deeper and are some of the best you will see in the Maltese Islands. Jump on a kayak or SUP and discover a hidden beach inside a cave underneath the Comino tower.
  3. Santa Marija Bay – A less touristy option with a small beach and only a 20 min walk to the blue lagoon, with shallow clear waters perfect for anchoring.

Top 3 things to do on Land:
  1. Explore the past at the historic Tower – Also known as Saint Mary’s Tower, this bastioned watch tower was built in 1618 and is well worth the scenic walk along the cliff face to reach. If you see the Knight’s flag flying on the tower, take it as a signal that you can venture inside for a free visit.
  2. Discover the many Caves Comino has to offer – Some of which are large enough to venture in by boat, others accessible from the shore. Some have beaches at the end, others have collapsed roofs forming wonderful rock formations. If anchoring in Santa Marija Bay, you must visit one of Comino’s greatest secrets: the cave with the indoor pool. Just follow the path west and, at the awesome boulders, leave the path and walk straight past them. The mouth of the cave is hidden from sight below the cliff but easily reached, and once inside, you emerge on the other side of the cliff, both from above ground and from below the surface of the sea!
  3. Explore the Coastline – Take advantage of cooler days on the island and hike across the impressive coastline with unobstructed views of both Malta & Gozo.

Did you know?

The island is a common spot for film-makers and most famously has been used to represent the prison of Château d’If in Alexander Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. Indeed St. Mary’s Tower took centre stage together with Guy Pearce and James Caviezel in this box office success. This same Tower was indeed a prison used by the Knights and extensively occupied during 1798-1800 French Blockade in which the Tower was home to suspected spies.
